Otoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that corrects the shape, position, and proportions of the ears. It is primarily indicated for prominent ears (protruding ears), but can also correct asymmetries and congenital defects of the ear.
The procedure is performed by making an incision behind the ear, through which the surgeon reshapes the ear cartilage. The cartilage is folded and secured with permanent sutures in the desired position, bringing the ear closer to the head.
There are different techniques depending on the defect to be corrected: • Classic otoplasty: for protruding ears, reshapes the antihelical fold • Otoplasty for macrotia: reduces the size of overly large ears • Reconstructive otoplasty: for congenital malformations (microtia, anotia) • Lobuloplasty: correction of elongated or torn earlobes
• Prominent (protruding) ears • Asymmetry between the two ears • Overly large ears (macrotia) • Elongated or torn earlobes from earrings • Congenital ear defects • Children from 6 years old (when the ear has reached its definitive size)
• Children under 5-6 years old • Active ear infections • Uncontrolled coagulation disorders • Unrealistic expectations about perfect symmetry
The procedure takes about 1-2 hours. It can be performed as a day surgery. Recovery requires 7-10 days, during which a protective elastic headband is worn.
In adults, it is performed under local anesthesia with sedation. In children, general anesthesia is preferred to ensure maximum comfort during the procedure.
Results are visible immediately after the bandage is removed. The final result is appreciated after 1-2 months, once the swelling has completely resolved.
Post-operative pain is generally mild and well managed with common painkillers. A sensation of tightness around the ears may be felt in the first few days.
The scar is located in the crease behind the ear and is virtually invisible, hidden by the natural fold between the ear and the skull.
Otoplasty can be performed from the age of 6, when the ear has reached approximately 90% of its adult size. There is no maximum age limit.
Yes, the results of otoplasty are permanent. Once the cartilage is reshaped and secured, it maintains its new shape over time.
