Laser Capillaries

What is Laser Capillaries treatment?

Laser capillary treatment uses vascular laser technology or intense pulsed light (IPL) to treat dilated capillaries (telangiectasias) on the face and legs, selectively closing abnormal blood vessels without damaging the skin and surrounding tissues. The principle of selective photothermolysis allows the laser to exclusively target hemoglobin within dilated capillaries, eliminating them precisely and permanently.

How does Laser Capillaries work?

The laser emits a specific wavelength (generally 532 nm or 1064 nm) that is selectively absorbed by oxyhemoglobin in the dilated capillaries. Light energy converts into heat, causing thermal coagulation of the vessel wall, which collapses on itself. The coagulated capillary is then progressively reabsorbed by the body through natural fibrous tissue elimination processes, leaving the skin free of the visible capillary.

Who is it suitable for?

• Facial telangiectasias (couperose), the branching red capillaries visible on cheeks, nose, and chin typical of fair and sensitive skin • Dilated capillaries on the legs, the red-blue surface veins that create widespread aesthetic concern • Flat angiomas and spider angiomas, benign vascular lesions of red or purple color • Vascular rosacea, to reduce the diffuse redness and visible capillaries associated with this condition • Prominent capillaries on the nose and cheeks, often worsened by factors such as temperature changes, alcohol, and sun exposure

Who should avoid it?

• Recent tan or sun exposure in the previous 3-4 weeks, as activated melanin could absorb laser energy causing unwanted effects • Pregnancy and breastfeeding, as a precautionary principle • Ongoing anticoagulant therapy, which may increase the risk of bruising in the treated area • Very dark skin type (Fitzpatrick V-VI), due to the risk of post-treatment discoloration • Active phlebitis or thrombosis in the treatment area

How long does the treatment take?

The treatment takes 15-30 minutes depending on the extent of the area and number of capillaries to be treated. It is performed in the office without special preparation. Recovery is immediate: mild redness or swelling in the treated area may occur, resolving spontaneously within a few hours. For leg capillaries, small crusts or mild bruising may appear, resolving in 5-7 days. Avoiding direct sun exposure and applying high SPF sunscreen in the following weeks is recommended.

Is anesthesia required?

Generally no anesthesia is needed. The sensation during treatment is comparable to mild tingling or a small elastic snap on the skin, well tolerated by most patients. For particularly sensitive areas or extensive treatments, a topical anesthetic cream can be applied 20-30 minutes before the session. Modern devices feature integrated cooling systems that protect the skin and further reduce discomfort.

When are results visible?

Results are progressive: treated capillaries begin to lighten and gradually disappear over the 2-4 weeks following the session, as the body reabsorbs the coagulated vessel. For facial capillaries, results are often visible after just a single session. For leg capillaries, which are generally larger in diameter, 2-3 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart may be needed for optimal results.

Can the capillaries come back?

Specific capillaries treated with laser are permanently eliminated and do not return. However, new capillaries may form over time, especially in patients with genetic predisposition to capillary fragility or exposure to aggravating factors such as prolonged sun exposure, prolonged standing, temperature changes, smoking, and alcohol consumption. For this reason, preventive measures such as daily sun protection, compression stockings if needed, and periodic maintenance sessions are recommended.
