Botox (botulinum toxin type A) is the most performed aesthetic medicine treatment in the world for reducing expression wrinkles. It works by temporarily and controllably relaxing the facial muscles responsible for forming dynamic wrinkles. Unlike fillers that fill wrinkles, Botox prevents their formation by acting directly on the muscular cause. It is a safe, quick treatment with predictable results, used for over thirty years in the medical field.
Botox is suitable for those who wish to soften or prevent expression wrinkles of the upper third of the face: • Horizontal forehead wrinkles, caused by the frontalis muscle movement • Glabellar lines (between the eyebrows), the so-called "frown lines" that give a scowling expression • Crow's feet, wrinkles at the sides of the eyes that become more pronounced when smiling • Non-surgical brow lift, to open the gaze by elevating the brow tail • Nose wrinkles (bunny lines) and neck bands (platysma) • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) of underarms, hands, and feet
The treatment is not recommended in the following cases: • Pregnancy and breastfeeding, as a precautionary principle in the absence of specific studies • Myasthenia gravis and other neuromuscular diseases, which may be worsened by the toxin's action • Allergy to albumin or other components of the medication • Active skin infections in the treatment area • Use of aminoglycosides or medications that interfere with neuromuscular transmission
The treatment takes just 15-20 minutes and is performed in the office without any special preparation. Small injections with an ultra-fine needle are administered at strategic points of the target facial muscles. Recovery is immediate and the patient can return to daily activities right after the session. Avoiding massage of the treated area and intense physical activity for 4-6 hours afterward is recommended, to prevent product diffusion to unintended areas.
No anesthesia is needed. Injections are administered with extremely fine needles (30-32 gauge) that cause only minimal, momentary discomfort, comparable to a mosquito bite. For more sensitive patients, ice or a topical anesthetic cream can be applied before treatment, but in the vast majority of cases this is unnecessary.
The effect of Botox is not immediate: the botulinum toxin requires 3-7 days to reach its full action on the treated muscles. Maximum results are appreciated after about 2 weeks. The effect lasts an average of 4-6 months, after which muscle movement gradually returns to normal. With regular treatments over time, many patients notice that intervals between sessions progressively lengthen, as muscles "learn" to contract less.
This is one of the most common fears, but with correct dosages and expert technique, the result is natural and harmonious. The goal is not to paralyze the muscles but to modulate their contraction to soften wrinkles while preserving the naturalness of facial expressions. The experienced practitioner carefully calibrates doses and injection points for each patient, considering individual muscle strength and the desired outcome. The so-called "frozen look" is the result of excessive dosages or inappropriate technique.
