Abdominoplasty

What is Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and restores muscle wall tone, resulting in a flat and toned belly. This procedure is particularly suited for patients who, following multiple pregnancies, significant weight fluctuations, or simply aging, present a lax abdomen with excess skin that no longer responds to exercise. Abdominoplasty can also correct diastasis recti, a separation of the abdominal muscles along the midline that is very common after pregnancy and causes a prominent abdomen despite normal weight.

Abdominoplasty is recommended for patients who present abdominal laxity that cannot be corrected with diet and exercise: • Excess abdominal skin after pregnancy, often accompanied by stretch marks in the lower abdomen • Diastasis recti (separated abdominal muscles), which causes a prominent abdomen and loss of visceral containment, sometimes associated with lower back pain • Significant skin laxity after major weight loss or bariatric surgery • Abdominal apron (panniculus) hanging below the underwear line, causing both aesthetic and functional discomfort • Abdominal wall hernias that can be corrected simultaneously

The procedure is not recommended in the following cases: • Planned future pregnancies, as a new pregnancy will stretch the skin and abdominal muscles again, negating the surgical result. It is preferable to wait until the reproductive journey is complete • Obesity, as abdominoplasty is not a weight-loss procedure. Achieving a stable weight before surgery is advisable • Active smokers, as smoking reduces blood supply to the tissues and significantly increases the risk of skin necrosis, infections, and delayed healing. Quitting at least 4-6 weeks before surgery is required • Uncontrolled coagulation disorders • Severe cardiac or pulmonary conditions that increase anesthetic risk

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure takes 2-4 hours depending on the extent: a full abdominoplasty with muscle repair requires longer than a mini-abdominoplasty limited to the sub-umbilical region. A 1-2 night hospital stay is required to monitor post-operative recovery. Drains are placed and removed after 2-3 days. Full recovery takes 2-4 weeks, during which wearing an abdominal compression garment is essential to support the tissues, reduce swelling, and promote healing. Light activities can resume after about 2 weeks, while sports and intense exertion should be avoided for at least 6-8 weeks.

Is anesthesia required?

Yes, abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia, as it is a procedure involving the full-thickness abdominal wall, including muscle repair. General anesthesia ensures maximum patient comfort and optimal operating conditions for the surgeon. A complete anesthesiology consultation with blood tests, electrocardiogram, and chest X-ray is performed before surgery to assess suitability and minimize risks.

When are the results visible?

The abdomen appears immediately flatter after surgery, but post-operative swelling, which is a normal part of the healing process, may mask the result in the first weeks. Swelling progressively reduces over the following months, and final results are appreciated after approximately 6 months, when tissues have completely stabilized and the scar has matured. The result is long-lasting, provided a stable weight and healthy lifestyle are maintained.

Will there be a scar?

Yes, abdominoplasty leaves a horizontal scar positioned low on the abdomen, along the bikini line, so that it is hidden by underwear and swimwear. The length of the scar varies based on the amount of skin removed: in a full abdominoplasty it extends from hip to hip, while in a mini-abdominoplasty it is shorter. In the first weeks the scar appears red and raised, but over the course of 6-12 months it progressively becomes lighter, flatter, and thinner. The use of specific silicone-based treatments during the post-operative period promotes optimal scar maturation.
